The hammer/drill is on the heavy side, but is an excellent hammer drill. I have been drilling very hard concrete with a very good non-hammer, corded, drill and it would take several minutes to complete each hole. The Porter-Cable cordless hammer drill complete a hole in seconds. Love the drill, just a little on the heavy side.

Be careful with this drill!

I have had one of these drills for almost two years now. The plastic handle around the trigger flexes when you are drilling. In other words, the motor is about to snap the handle casing...this drill can only handle mild tasks.

My husband had a porter cable 14.4 drill and had been drooling over this one. Well I bought it as a gift for him. First use he noticed that the chuck had a wobble in it. He has only had it for a couple of months and the wobble has gotten increasingly worse. Now it's getting to the point that the chuck won't even hold onto a drill bit. Maybe I just got a bad one but I wouldn't buy this one again.

Ordered this PC drill to replace my 5yr old 12volt PC drill. The 12volt was great - I'm keeping it to use around the house on small projects. Still the original batteries, etc. That PC drill was worth every penny. This new 19v however, I'm not so sure about. Yes it has great torque, I love that it has a all metal ratcheting chuck, but... the chuck on my drill seems to have an issue.
br /Trying to get a bit or a driver in the chuck w/out wobble is a mission! I'm not acustomed to this problem. I have 3 drills and have never had this kind of problem. I'm hoping it's just a defect. The nice folks at Amazon are sending a replacement and we will see how it goes. My only fear is that this is a design issue and not a defect. If so, I'm doing what everyone else is doing these days, buying a Milwaukee. I hate to abandon PC who usually makes a great product, but I use these drills for a living and I can't afford to play games.
br /Updates when I get the relplacement.....

Good Tool, Bad Battery

This is a great tool; smooth, not heavy, rugged case, good power. This does have plastic drive gears which eventually wear out but is fine the casual worker or light work. I spent 3 weekends driving 3/8 lags screws and stripped the gears. No problem getting a new drill. I have 2 other similair models but the batteries last about 2 hours with medium work load and may take 4 or more hours to cool off and take 2 hours to charge. My old model PC drill last 4 hours and charges in about 1 1/2 hours.

Not that good for the money

I bought this drill a few years back and was never happy with it. The chuck on this drill is poor quality as are the gears inside the drill. The batteries are okay. And Porter Cable just doesn't make that good a product anymore.
br / I switched back to Milwaukee and wondered why I ever changed in the first place.
br / Buyers beware of this drill.

I own a number of P.C. tools and have generally been happy with them. I bought a 19.2 volt Drill Driver about 2 years ago and it has provided very good service. However I just bought a companion 19.2 Hammer Driver on 7/11. Well the other day with about the third or forth work day of use on it the gun started to smoke from the back and slow down. The battery heated up and it smelled like mealting plastic, so i stopped using it immediately. Guess I'll have to send it back and try again. All my other 19.2 tool work great. The Tiger saw is a work horse!

br /Well its August of 2006 and my PC Hammer Drill torqued up in a tight spot and the trigger jammed in the "on" position. By the time I got it pulled out of the hole the insides burned up. I guess this was my fault but I would hope that a tool of this caliber would not fail so quickly under adverse conditions. I'm gonna buy a new one just to have the batteries. I think I will also raise the rating to Three (3) stars.

I bought the PC 9987 hammerdrill back in Dec '04. The drill has gone through alot of lag bolts, deck screws and drilling out holes in hardwood and softwood. It works great! Never misses a beat. I own many Porter Cable tools and have found them all to be of excellent quality. The drill, the batteries, the charger, the flashlight (comes in very handy) - no complaints whatsoever. I still own one from the previous generation of cordless drills - still working great! My wife uses my old one because it has the smaller battery.
br / It has plenty of torque and runs very smoothly. It is on the heavy side, which is something PC could improve. As far as quality and performance goes, Porter Cable is at the TOP - irreregardless of what magazine reviewers say. Whenever I am in need of a tool, I always look to see what the Porter Cable model is like, and so far it's the brand I usually end up buying.
br / A point of correction to a previous reviewer - the gears on this drill are ALL metal - It says so right on the box label!

Except for a few initial impressions it's difficult to rate cordless drills until they start to fail. This is quite a heavy tool which is the tradeoff for its power and charge duration though it is decently balanced. I purchased this model with the hammer feature only because at the time it was the only way I could get the 2.4 Amp-hr batteries vs. the 2.0. This difference may not sound like much but it is worth whatever it takes to get this upgrade for the longer run time. I do also like having the 1/2" chuck. I've owned an armload of P-C drills and am willing to continue with them. Despite reports to the contrary, I've had good experiences with their customer service.

I am very pleased with this drill. It is replacing a BlackDecker 14.4 volt drill I purchased 2 years ago. The Porter-Cable drill appears to be a much better made drill. I really like the two speed ranges. The charger will not charge hot batterys which would shorten battery life, a great feature if your relatives borrow you tools and do not read instructions. For heavy duty use Porter-Cable offers the same drill with a heavy duty battery, but with the 1 hour charger, I have not found a need for a larger battery. A great product!!

I AM A CUSTOM INSTALLER IN THE AV INDUSTRY AND I USE MY DRILL(S) ALL DAY EVERYDAY AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE BEST DRILL I HAVE HAD YET. WOOD, METAL, MASONRY, NOTHING CAN STOP IT. EVERTHING FROM THE POWER, THE CHUCK, THE BATTERY LIFE, TO THE GRIP IS GREAT. WITH MY PC DRILL I REPLACED SEVERAL OTHER DRILLS INCLUDING AN 18V DEWALT (THE DEWALT WAS GREAT BUT SO COMMON THAT THE BATTRIES SEEMED TO DISAPEAR ALL THE TIME). FROM MY EXPIRIENCE MILWALKIES ARE JUST AS GOOD AND DEWALTS AND RIGIDS ARE NOT FAR BEHIND BUT I LOVE MY PC.

Bought it 5 years ago and I still love it!

I bought the drill a little over five years ago and I am as pleased with it now as I was when it was brand new. This drill has been put through it's paces over the last five years and never fails. It has been well used and abused, dropped (off of roofs), kicked and just generally abused as any tool would be. The only draw back to the drill is the fact that it is heavier than most, but you won't mind. The battery life if very good and re-charge time is quick. All in all it is highly reccomended, this coming five years later and not right after it was bought.

It keeps going and going and going...

I bought this drill 4 years ago and liked it so well I purchased another one!! I also bought the flashlight. Watch when replacing the battery to be sure and get the larger amp one it lasts much longer hopefully PC will follow as the rest of the manufacturers with lithium batteries.Only one drawback was the cost of replacment batteries. But I guess you get what you pay for. They truly last a long time. We use on a daily basis in the field and were completely satisified.

One of the Best.

I bought my drill in Nov. 2003, and the performance it puts out is outstanding. It's expensive, but it's worth every penny I spent for it. 2 years ago I paid with tax, $230.00 for one, because I was building a patio room and a deck. The power it possess!!! This drill is so powerful, it will drive 6" to 8" bolts in the wall like childs play. I promise you that you will not be sorry if you purchase this one, it's a keeper. WARNING: Be careful if you're driving bolts, this drill will sprang or break your wrist if you're not careful, and I do mean careful, and that's the only down fall. Battery charging, in 1 hour the battery is fully charged, and it last for, (depending on use) heavy 1 to 2hrs, light use 3 - 5hrs, it comes with 2 Batteries. Plus you can have it repaired if it breaks or if you need a part you can order it and replace it yourself, the info is in the case. So all I can tell you now is go and get one.

Don't waste your money...

I bought this drill and the drill and saw kit. In the first year I replaced the drill/drivers three times...while under warranty. The saw worked well and the flashlight was the best part of this kit. Now it is a couple years old and the batteries are dead and at $90 each I am not replacing them. I bought Hitachi this time with a five year warranty. I wasted $600 on the Porter Cable junk. I noticed that most stores are carrying this line anymore.

It was cheeper to buy this hammer drill with two batteries than to buy just two new batteries. The hammer drill is a nice add to my collection of tools for all my projects.

My 5 year old 19.2 Porter Cable 1/2 inch drill had a battery go bad. So I bought this one. Turns out the charger was bad so now I have two great drills and 4 batteries! Cool! This drill is everything they say it is. It goes through concrete block like butter. Have not tried it in poured concrete yet. The chuck is much better than the old one. When the motor is stoped, the shaft is locked and that makes it easier to loosen the chuck with one hand.

My father is a contractor who is very picky about his tools, and very hard on them as well. This is the 3rd drill of the same model for him, and he keeps going back to it because he likes it so much. I even picked one up for myself, seeing how much he likes his! It drills through anything! Good battery life, charges quickly, great product overall. A bit heavy, but understandably so, seeing that the power it puts out needs to come from somewhere!

I have one of this in a Quad pack and it is a waste of money. although the power is ok you cant keep the batteries charged. I spent a lot of money trying too figure out why the drill didnt last long and i came too an conclusion that the drill and Porter Cable Sucks. For real power and Juice BUY RIDGID TOOLOS.
