The DW928K-2 was the first cordless drill that I purchased (over 5 years ago) and I've been extremely impressed with its performance. I make cabinets on the side and, naturally, I'm a weekend warrior. This drill has NEVER let me down. Though I've been able to drive 3" wall anchors with no problem, I would suggest pre-drilling for a couple of reasons. First, it will prevent future (or immediate) cracking in the wood. Second, the counter-sink looks so much nicer. Third, it's just a lot easier to drive that long screw. If you've got substandard screws, your drill might tear off the head ;-). The pinnacle of the drill's performance was mixing thinset for laying tile. My corded drill burnt right out. Even a friend's big 1/2" chuck Makita was getting too hot to hold and I was smelling smoke. My 14.4 DeWALT came through like a trooper. But hold on tight, the drill's so powerful that it could break your wrist. As far as the speed settings go, always remember to use "1" for driving screws and "2" for drilling holes. The lower number is slower (yeah, I'm a fast one). Slower driving of screws will reduce stripping and breaking bits. As my cabinet business grew, I bought another one of these drills. A great advantage to buying 14.4 DeWALT drills is that there's a whole brigade of DeWALT tools that use the same battery, and they all come with their own battery and charger. I have two drills, a flashlight, a circular saw, and I just purchased a right-angle drill in the same line. I've always got a couple of batteries in the charger, and I'm always prepared to start working. As is the same with most batteries, try and run your battery out before charging it, and let it charge fully (until the light on the charger stops blinking). There are jobs that are too much for this drill, but they are generally big professional jobs (not for the standard weekend warrior) and that's why DeWAL makes an 18v and 24v line!
This is a very powerful drill!

When I began looking around for a replacement for my 9.6v DeWalt cordless drill, I assumed I would be buying a 12v DeWalt. My 9.6v almost always had the power to do what I asked of it, so 12v seemed the next logical step. Then I found this 14.4v drill for an incredible price at a day-after-Thanksgiving sale (Lowes). In fact, the 99 bucks I paid for this drill is less that what I paid for my 9.6v 8+ years ago!
After using this drill on a couple of projects I can say two things with all honesty. First of all this drill is not overly heavy (I was worried about that), and second, it has power to spare. I suspect that the torque this drill provides is overkill for driving screws in most applications - afterall I was happy with the screw driving abilities of my 9.6v. However, it is very nice to have that torque when you are drilling through wood with big bits.
Basically, this drill is a very strong performer. The charger is well made, I have had no problems with it or the batteries, and the case is well made. If you have need for this kind of power or you find a good deal like I did, I highly recommend that you make this purchase!

This is a replacement for my old 9.6V. Did not want to go up in voltage because of the balance and wieght of my 9.6V. Wrong answer.
The DW928 is well balanced and the weight is not noticable. The speed switch works easily. Which is a great improvement in the cordless line. Others i have looked at were hard to move. Many more clutch settings over my old one.
Battery life is unreal. Really gave it a workout. Good Job DeWalt
I would highly recommend this drill if 14 Volt is your game.

I bought this drill at lowes for $75.00 with 2 batteries and case. At 4.2 lbs it feels like a feather compared to my monster 18v Bosch hammerdrill(6.7 lb). It seems to have all of the power I need, and it can handle the bigger bits.It is a real arm
saver.
Dewalts new compact series drill has more power than the 928,but also weighs several ounces more. The 928 is the most comfortable drill I have ever used.
I have found that the 928 has several limitations.
1. Limited runtime, while the 928 can use the big bits,it can't drill nearly as many holes as my 18v Bosch, this would probably apply to most 14.4v drills.
2. Two sleve chuck,Single sleeve is better.
3. Poor finish, The seam between the two body halves, are poorly finished, and are irratating in the handle area. I have noticed this on many of Dewalts Mexican made tools. My bosch on the on the other hand the body is perfectly finished.
All in all,it is a fine drill,if you can get one at a good price(like I did). Remember,The current drill goes for about $170.00 in most stores,I only paid $75.00. I have learned that when at home depot or lowes, always to check the return rack.

Decent tool but you'll spend a fortune in batteries

Dewalt Cordless tools are decent enough but they seem to be trying to make extra profits by selling more batteries. Battery life is so poor that in a few years you'll spend more than the tool cost on batteries. Everyone that I know that has purchased Dewalt is switching to Porter Cable, Rigid, Bosch and even Ryobi.
This drill is awsome

This drill is really good.My partner had for 3 years and took several drops of roofs before he bought a new one I've had mine for about a year and it is way better than my old 18 volt it weights alot less thats for sure and my battery last almost just long its a sweet drill.

The drill is fine and does what I want, but I cannot finish a job before both batteries are drained. When fully charged they drill fine in to a solid tree stump. But after drilling three 1/2 inch wide 12 inch deep holes the battery gives out and has to be swapped.pNow Dewault has come out with longer life batteries, I wonder why, but for those of us who already have the drill maybe they should offer an upgrade program to make buying the new batteries cheaper so we get the most out of an otherwise decent drill.
Buy a P*C or Bosch

Piece of S**T! Dewalt used to make very reliable tools. That's why I bought this one, my old 12v finally died. From the very beginning I could tell qulity was no longer an issue. Out of the case the clutch didn't work (2 settings 1 and drill). The speed range slips anytime it runs for more then 5 screws, and on long jobs batteries only last about 15mins and require 45mins to charge.br On top of all this DeWalts' customer service sucks!!!

When I was looking for a new cordless drill, I went to Lowes to inspect and test feel the various makes and models.brI was already leaning towards DeWalt for both their reputation amongst my friends as well as their financial commitment to the PBR (Professional Bull Riders).brI looked at Makita (Made in Taiwan)brStihl (Made in Mexico)brPorter-Cable (Made in China)brMilwaukee (Made in Germany)brBlackDecker (Made in China)brUpon further inspection, the 14.4 DeWalt was the ONLY cordless drill made in this country in my price range. Actually, it was a little more....but well worth the money if I know it is going to help one of my fellow countrymen keep his/her job in the States a little longer.brThis took me over an hour to do...but it was worth every minute!brWe should all put the time in to research where our consumer dollars are headed once they leave our hands.brThe drill is great....batteries charge properly and it is handy and easy to manuever. The lightweight/compact design is a welcome touch by the RD folks at DeWalt. I would recommend this item to everyone!brKeep up the GREAT work, DeWalt!!!!!brAlso, thanks to Amazon.Com
